Michigan's list tops 450 species, but one bird defines the state: Kirtland's Warbler. Nearly the entire world population nests in the young jack-pine barrens around Grayling, and guided June tours make this once-nearly-extinct conservation comeback one of the most reliable rare-bird experiences in America.
The Great Lakes shape everything else. Whitefish Point on Lake Superior funnels a spectacular spring flight of raptors, waterbirds, and owls; Tawas Point earns its nickname as the Cape May of the Midwest each May; and in winter the snowy fields of the eastern Upper Peninsula host Snowy Owls, Rough-legged Hawks, and winter finches straight out of the boreal.

Where to bird in Michigan
Whitefish Point
Lake Superior's migration funnel: the observatory's spring counts bring thousands of raptors, loons, and jaegers past the point, and April owl-banding nights reveal saw-whets, Long-eareds, and the occasional Boreal Owl.
Tawas Point State Park
The Cape May of the Midwest — a Lake Huron sandspit where May cold fronts drop warblers, orioles, and flycatchers into knee-high junipers at arm's length.
The Grayling jack pines
Kirtland's Warbler country. Nearly the whole world population breeds in these young jack-pine stands; join a guided tour from Hartwick Pines State Park in June to hear males singing from the pine tops.
Seney National Wildlife Refuge
The Upper Peninsula's marshland showcase: Trumpeter Swans and Common Loons on the pool loops, Sandhill Cranes bugling over the sedge, and boreal breeders in the surrounding forests.
Pointe Mouillee State Game Area
Lake Erie marsh restoration at scale — late-summer mudflats crowded with shorebirds, herons, and terns, and one of the Midwest's best spots for godwits, avocets, and rarities.
Muskegon Wastewater System
Unglamorous and legendary: the settling ponds pull in shorebirds, ducks, gulls, and an outsized share of Michigan rarities, from phalaropes to jaegers, with easy driving access.
Tiscornia Beach & Berrien County
The state's southwest corner: fall lakewatching for jaegers and Sabine's Gulls off the St. Joseph pier, and a county list famous for turning up whatever the lake winds deliver.
Lake Erie Metropark
One of North America's great hawkwatches — on peak mid-September days, tens of thousands of Broad-winged Hawks stream over the Detroit River corridor.
The Rudyard loop
The eastern UP's winter grid of snowy fields and fence posts: Snowy Owls, Rough-legged Hawks, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Snow Buntings, and — in flight years — Great Gray and Northern Hawk Owls.
Michigan birding by season
Spring (March–May) — The lakes funnel everything north
Whitefish Point's raptor and waterbird flights build through April into May, while Tawas Point and the Lake Huron shoreline catch warbler fallouts — 25-warbler mornings happen every May.
Summer (June–August) — Kirtland's Warbler and the boreal north
June is Kirtland's season in the jack pines, while the Upper Peninsula hosts breeding loons, Trumpeter Swans, and northern warblers; by late July, southbound shorebirds hit Pointe Mouillee's flats.
Fall (September–November) — Hawk rivers and lakewatch winds
Mid-September sends Broad-winged kettles over Lake Erie Metropark by the tens of thousands; October northwest blows push jaegers and Sabine's Gulls past the Lake Michigan piers.
Winter (December–February) — Owls and finches in the snow country
The Rudyard fields host Snowy Owls and Rough-legged Hawks every winter, Bohemian Waxwings and winter finches roam the UP, and open water on the Great Lakes concentrates ducks and gulls.
