Overview

Ecuador holds the world record for bird species per square kilometer, and the Andes are the engine behind that diversity. Elevational gradients create stacked habitats from cloud forest to paramo grassland, each with its own distinct avifauna. A single day can cross three climate zones and 200 species.

Travel Tips

October through February is the driest period in the western Andes.

Altitude sickness is real above 3,500m. Acclimatize before birding the paramo.

Pack for four seasons in one day. Temperatures range from 5C to 28C depending on elevation.

Many top sites require advance booking and guides. Arrange logistics before arrival.

Andean Cock-of-the-rock

Fourteen males at the lek, bouncing and calling at dawn. The neon orange against dark green forest is sensory overload. Angel Paz is a legend.

Sword-billed Hummingbird

Perched on a feeder with that impossible bill tilted upward. The only bird whose bill is longer than its body. Had to see it to believe it.

Giant Antpitta

Angel called "Maria! Maria!" and this football-sized bird walked out of the forest and ate worms from his hand. Surreal.
